Icefishing competition in Kuttainen

This picture is from a icefishing competition arranged in Kuttainen, 220 kilometer outside of the Kiruna city. Icefishing is made on the Muonioriver that makes the border between Sweden and Finland.

From November to March locals are very issolated people living here through the cold and hash winter season. But in the month of March people put together their picnic, brings out the snowmobile from the garage and get out for icefishing. This is a common hobby for the most locals, here is also icefishing competitions arranged every single weekend in some of the many villages surrounding this arctic region.

White mountain grouse

Here is a unfortunate white mountain grouse hit by a car, find along the mountain road. Anyway we have a good poulation of these white mountain grouse again after it has been almost gone some years. Much poular wildlife activity is the white mountain grouse hunting season.

Travelling by car along mountain roads in winter time

I do lot travelling by car along mountain roads here to reach out to the reindeer herding occations. In winter time we use to collect all our reindeers and count them for to send the numbers to the government. Since some years we must also feed our reindeers out to the mountains since we have almost no whitemoss left for the reindeers to eat. The climate change has made it hard for the reindeers to survive on its own. There is more worthless grass growing on the mountains and that competite out the important reindeer feed, the whitemoss. Because of 0.4 degree warmer temperature we have got 11 new herbs and grass sorts growing up with longer roots than the whitemoss has. That kills the whitemoss.However, here is a couple of pictures a january night that says some about how much snow it can be here near the border between Sweden and Norway.

I am Roger K. Olsson

For us humans here on earth, life is relatively short. The time we have here on earth, we should take care of it in a good way.

Moreover, here is little about me. I am a former elite sportsman in olympic biathlon, and when I start the high school I went to the sports high school in olympic biathlon, I was one of 12 choosen in Sweden. For now that was a long ago, and I have left it behind me, I am no more active in any sports at all. I made my studies in regional development at the University in Uppsala, Sweden, I do got education in 3 years to become a project leader, and I have been politically active for 4 years after studies.  My profession now is based part time  in mill renovation works here in the iron ore company of Kiruna, Sweden.

Also, I belong to the minority people here called Sami people, who have the rights to own reindeers, so I am a reindeer herder too. I spend many days of the year up in the mountains here in Sweden and Norway. My life has been more and more for every year based in that kind of lifestyle and I think I have built up a nice infrastructure for that with the years.

I have had a time in life when I was travelling a lot, I been living in Seattle, Washington, USA for several years, and I have travelled the Europe, Turkey, and parts of Asia. We'll I have more and more get to see the beauty of this northern region as the years go by. It feels like some more easy to come back where one have the roots and the memories from youth.

We are in Kiruna, Sweden now and tonight it will be a nice dinner and party. We will heat the sauna and drink Redbull and vodka, and the world's best beer.

Snowstorm and poor visibility on the mountain

Snowstorm and poor visibility early in the morning when we travel over the mountain on snowmobile. But it clears up to the day and the visibility gets better. We manage again without having to orient ourselves with the help of gps.

Here we look for the reindeer down in the valley from a higher mountain to see that everything is calm and peaceful. It usually gives an idea of how the reindeer are fed from the ground, then they keep calm.

Wonderful evening on a snowmobile trip

A few days on the mountain can be fabulously beautiful, this evening in February was a wonderful evening to stay little bit longer than usually on the mountain.

My friend just arrives home from being to the reindeer herd on the mountain. We live in a cabin for the season on the mountain and have a 40 minute snowmobile ride every day to the reindeer herd. Today it was -28 ° C cold and windy.
